Channel Islands Restoration Docent Training

Are you passionate about nature, local history, and sharing the wonders of the San Marcos Foothills Preserve with others? We're looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our docent program, and you may be a wonderful fit.

As a docent at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve, you'll have the opportunity to teach visitors about our native plants and wildlife, share the preserve's fascinating history, and help foster a deeper connection between our community and this treasured open space. Whether you're interested in botany, birds, geology, or simply love being outdoors, there's a place for you in our program.

What we're looking for:

  • A love of nature and enthusiasm for the San Marcos Foothills Preserve
  • Willingness to learn about local ecology, wildlife, and natural history
  • Comfortable speaking with groups of varying ages and sizes
  • Ability to commit to training online and in person and serving on walks once or twice a month.
  • Friendly, welcoming demeanor and passion for environmental education

No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity and commitment. Our training program will equip you with everything you need to become a confident and knowledgeable guide.

Docents are the heart of our preserve, helping visitors discover the native grasslands, oak woodlands, seasonal creeks, and stunning views that make the San Marcos Foothills so special. Your involvement will directly contribute to conservation and community connection to this irreplaceable landscape.

We'll be holding an informational meeting and walk on Saturday, March 28, at 10:00 AM at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve entrance on Via Gaitero Road. We’d love to see you there to learn more about the program. If you are unavailable for this meeting, you can still sign up for the training by contacting Natasha Booth (natasha@cirweb.org).

If you're interested or have questions, please reach out to Ken Owen (ken@cirweb.org). We are happy to answer any questions and help you take the first step toward becoming a San Marcos Foothills Preserve docent.

Thank you for considering this rewarding opportunity to give back to our community and preserve.
